Scientific Name Of Carrot Seed Oil

The botanical name of wild carrot is Daucus carota L.

History Of Carrot Seed Oil

The plant has considerable historical importance. Wild carrot (Daucus carota) was introduced and naturalized in North America. Besides Europe, it is also known as Queen Anne’s lace in North America too.

It is named after both Anne (the Queen of Great Britain) and her great grandmother, Anne of Denmark. This is because the flowers of wild carrot appear like lace. (2, 3, 4)

About Daucus Carota Plant:

The common names of wild carrot are Beesnest Plant, Daucus carota, Bird’s Nest Root, Garijara, Carotte Commune, Nid d’Oiseau, Carotte Sauvage, Shikha-Mula, Dauce Carotte, Daucus, Nan He-Shi, Queen Anne’s Lace, and Zanahoria Silvestre.

The plant belongs to family Apiaceae. It is widely found in meadows and man-made fields. Wild carrot is a terrestrial plant distributed across England.

However, it is also found abundantly in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Connecticut. It is a biennial plant, which grows to a height of 30 – 60 cm (1 – 2 feet) and is coarsely hairy with a solid and stiff stem. (5, 6)

The flowers are seen in three different colors – purple, red, and white. They are radially symmetrical and bilateral. They have five petals, sepals, and tepals.

The petals and sepals are separate and have 5 stamens. The leaves are compound (made up of two or more discrete leaflets), with an alternate arrangement and bladed edges. (7)

The fruits are dry and don’t drop even after ripening. They are 2-4 mm in length. Weeds are found along with the plant. These weeds are beneficial and work as companion of the plant.

Its small flowers are known to attract wasps. In northeast Wisconsin, they are seen growing along with blueberries, making it attractive to both butterflies and wasps. (8)

This species is found to boost the growth of tomato plants when kept nearby, as it grows along with other weeds and all are equally benefitted. It is said to cool the climate and is excellent for growing lettuce when intercropped.

It persists in the soil seed bank for 2 to 5 years. Talking about its taste, different factors may cause the carrot roots to taste bitter, as they are abnormal metabolites (notably 6-methoxymellin).

For example, carrots tend to have a more bitter taste when they grow in the form of weeds with apples. Another responsible factor is ethylene, which may easily produce stress, causing an abnormal, bitter taste. (9)

Health Benefits Of Carrot Seed Oil

Carrot seed oil helps relieve muscle aches, cures anorexia, and enhances the production of erythrocytes. It is used as an abortifacient and contraceptive for thousands of years.

Wild carrot is a rich source of antioxidants. They scavenge free radicals generated inside the body as a waste metabolic product. These free radicals are the root cause of various diseases.

The antioxidants in carrot seeds account for various health benefits. They help protect the skin from wrinkles, hair from whitening, joints from stiffening, muscles from weakening, and eyesight from declining.

Being a rich source of vitamin A, it strengthens the eye muscles and prevents the vision from weakening. Further, they protect from macular degeneration, sexual disorders, improper digestion, and other aging symptoms.

2. Helps cure cancer

Carrot seed oil is a strong anticancerous agent and has been found beneficial in the treatment of various types of cancers like oral cancer, throat cancer, stomach cancer, prostate cancer, and renal cancer.

The anti-carcinogenic properties can be attributed partly to its antioxidant properties. Being an excellent antioxidant, it scavenges the free radicals and breaks the wall of infected cells.

It also prevents the uncontrolled growth of the cells. Tumor formation or tumorigenesis is the initial sign of the appearance of cancer. However, the antioxidants prevent the formation of the tumor and further, cures cancer. (12, 13)

3. Diuretic in nature

Carrot seed oil is a well known diuretic, meaning that it increases urination. It seems that there is no apparent benefit of this property, but it is surprising that proper urination alone can protect many health issues. (14)

When you urinate, the excess fat (almost 4% of the volume), toxic substances such as uric acid & bile, and microbes that cause infections in the urinary system, are excreted from the body.

Furthermore, it reduces blood pressure by removing excess salts from the blood and cleans the kidneys. It is also helpful in cleaning or refining the renal calculi.

4. Expels gas or controls acidity

Wild carrot seed oil or carrot seed oil is one of the best home remedies to treat excess gas formation in the stomach. It removes the gas accumulated and reduces acidity. It helps in expelling the gas from the intestines, nullifying the acidic impact on the stomach and further, strengthening the digestion. (15)

5. Effective growth enhancer

Carrot seed oil is considered as one of the best natural growth enhancers. It regulates the hormones and enzymes. Being a stimulant and rich source of vitamin E, it helps in proper secretion of growth hormone.

This is aminly due to the presence of flavinoids in it, which help in the secretion of Human Growth Hormone (HGH), a hormone responsible for height. Besides this, it is also helpful in proper growth of hair and skin. (16)

6. Eliminates infections from parasitic worms

Carrot seed oil is reported being useful in treating infections caused by the worms, especially helminths. These worms enter into the human system by unwashed hands, vegetables, or other contaminated products. They can cause severe infections in children, and sometimes, the condition may become lethal if left untreated. (17)

7. Strengthens the digestive system

Carrot seed oil helps in strengthening the digestive system naturally. It acts as an effective stimulant and tonic. It stimulates the function of bile juice, ensuring that the formation of excess acid and gas in the stomach is reduced.

Being a rich source of carotene and vitamin A, it regulates proper hormonal and enzymatic secretion. Bile juice is vital for emulsification of undigested fats.

With carrot seed oil, both acid secretion and bile functions are regulated, helping the digestive system to be healthy. (18)

8. Acts as a stimulant

Carrot seed oil works as a potent stimulant. It stimulates both circulation and metabolic function. It helps in the secretion of enzymes, hormones, bile, gastric juices, and intestines’ peristaltic motion.

With all these, it assists in keeping our bodily systems efficient and active. It also stimulates brain functions and nerves, and thus, works as an effective nervine tonic. (19)

9. Great antiseptic

Carrot seed oil is known for its antiseptic properties, including its ability to prevent tetanus. On topical application (diluted with a carrier oil), carrot seed oil cures open wounds and skin infections.

It is extremely useful in the treatment of carbuncles, gangrene, sores, ulcers, psoriasis, rashes, etc. It effectively works on viral infections that occur in the respiratory tract. It is beneficial in treating bronchitis and other viral infections such as mumps, flu, coughs, measles, and colds.

This is mainly due to the presence of carotene and vitamin A in it.

Carrot seed oil is an effective emmenagogue or antiblennorrhagic. Being a rich source of vitamin A, carotene, and other antioxidants, it helps in regulating hormonal secretion.

Menstrual disorders are one of the major problems women experience. They are an indication of proper hormonal and enzymatic functions. It helps in regulating the thyroid secretion.

A proper thyroid function is necessary for regulating other hormones like estrogen and progesterone in women. An imbalanced thyroid level has a direct impact on the progesterone levels.
